Uh, excuse me, Waiter…..this isn't quite what I ordered…..surviving life in the world of special needs Menu ABOUT US PHOTOS JACOB “SAID”S QUESTION ME! FUNDING AND RESOURCES CONTACT ME FREELANCE SAMPLE ARTICLES Search for: Osmosis Watch this, and then we’ll chat: Have you ever given much thought to how important touch is? How healing it is? This video turned me into a sappy mess as I imagined how each hug must’ve felt. I love hugs! I am among the top ten best huggers on the planet, I’m entirely sure. I live for touch! Ask Toddy and my kids. There is nothing that can top the awesomeness of bodily contact especially when one is at an emotional low. In those moments when life is getting me down to my own lowest, a hug from Todd or Jacob is the one thing that settles me. Sometimes that’s all I need……just a hug. Unfortunately, so many people go without. How sad it is that there are such lonely people in this world. Actually, touch is vitally important in life. I remember reading about a study conducted where a chimpanzee was placed in a cage and raised all by himself with absolutely no contact with any other living thing. Completely isolated. His nutritional needs were met, but over time, he developed into an angry, aggressive, maladjusted creature. It was really quite tragic. I wonder what it is about touch, bodily contact, that is so healing. Is it an entirely psychological phenomenon, or is there some sort of biochemical significance that occurs? It’s not even restricted to human contact. I read a poster once that listed 50 things to do to relieve stress. One of my favorite suggestions was to pet a cat…….I love cats! Jacob is sitting beside me on the couch as I write this, and I asked him for his thoughts on the topic. He said it’s the exchanging of energy……………then he said, “Actually, that sounds disgusting.” Hahahahaha………..either way, that makes total sense! How’d he get so smart? As I’ve never studied the concept much past a casual observation, I hadn’t really thought of it in terms of energy. Entirely fascinating! Maybe that’s why pet therapy is so effective in hospitals and nursing homes. Perhaps the act of petting an animal creates some sort of energy connection. I had always thought of the whole concept of humans and “energy” stuff as sounding “hokey.” Funny thing, though, is that the older I get, the less I know. The less I’m sure of. I start to wonder if maybe there is something to all of it. What I know for certain is how good it feels to hug my loved ones. It’s like I absorb them through osmosis. Maybe I actually am! Oh so much to learn in this life we are living: It is a brand new year! How exciting!!! And do you want to know why? Because it’s a fresh start. It’s a chance to learn from the past days, months, years……..to grow from those experiences and embrace them, good or bad, as the building blocks of who we are as individuals. Recognize and applaud yourself for all that you’ve accomplished. Use descriptive, powerful language such as, “I’ve excelled!” or “I survived!” or “I conquered!” Never sell yourself short. After all, you were made in God’s image. Sometimes we get bogged down in emotional pain from which it can feel impossible to escape. People will often advise not to let it define who we are, but that advice requires clarification. If our experiences are, in fact, our personal building blocks, then our emotional responses built into those experiences are part of the puzzle. If we run from that pain, the puzzle that is each of us will remain scattered, unfinished. As terrifying as the prospect of facing the past may seem, how else can one take hold of the reins of that pain and bring it into submission? Regrets are debilitating. They are negative and taint the puzzle pieces that inevitably meld together within us. The most powerful lesson I’ve learned in life thus far is that I have ultimate control over who I am. If there is something I don’t like about myself, I strive to change it simply because I can’t stand not liking a given part of myself (and believe me!! I HAVE PARTS!!) If we are all placed here for a reason, then it is a journey within which we find ourselves. A journey is an experience of discovery. As such, it is continually evolving. That is where the power emerges. Who do you suppose is writing life’s chapters? Well, if we are the pilots of our own fate, then that makes us the authors of those chapters. Not crazy about the outcome of a particular chapter? You are the only one who has the power to write the next one. Distance that has grown between loved ones can be shortened. Wounds that have festered can be healed. Bitterness can be eliminated. All that is required is a decision, a choice, on your part. You decide your own next chapter. One of my brothers once said to me, “Nothing in this life should be viewed as a mistake as long as you learn from it.” You earned every bit of yourself! Be proud!! Leave a comment Father Time I feel like the whole world – or at least MY world – is spinning out of control. Melodramatic, I know, but the cliché applies well here. I’m not even sure what I’m going to write, but I feel like every time life gets this way, the only way to slow it all down is to enter my place of refuge – my blog – and sort it all out. Picture a rapidly swirling snow globe of utter confusion in accelerated, fast-forward motion, and that’s my head these days. It seems like so much is happening all at once. Then I wonder if it really is a chaotic explosion of life happenings or if it’s just me getting older (I AM NOT!!!) and less capable of dealing as effectively with things as I once did. I used to tell my mom that age scared me…..she’d respond, “Well it’s no picnic.” I’m beginning to realize what she meant by that. I remember as a kid listening to my parents and their coffee friends chatting about all of their aches and pains. I’d think, “What is wrong with you people?! Is that seriously all you can talk about?” This is the hilarious part: NOW TODD AND I DO IT TOO!!! And I finally understand why that is: when you reach a certain age, physical dysfunction starts to set in. Knees hurt, backs ache, joints burn, you start holding written text further away from you in order to locate your ideal point of focus. The first time I instinctively extended my arm to its furthermost length because I couldn’t see the print absolutely blew my mind! I couldn’t believe I had actually done that!!! I’m sitting here still laughing about my reaction in that moment…..that real...
